Last checked: July 8, 2026 Vietnam changed its entry rules twice in mid-2026, so we date this post and update it when things move.

The Vietnam entry requirements 2026 tripped up a lot of travellers this year, and half the guides online are already out of date. The rules are not hard, but they changed. As Canadians who just went through it, here is the honest version, no fluff. There are two things you must sort before you land, and one thing the internet keeps telling you to do that you actually do not.
In this guide — jump to what you need
Vietnam entry requirements 2026 at a glance
Before you fly to Vietnam as a Canadian in 2026, do these two things:
The health declaration form you may have read about? It was going to be mandatory from July 1, 2026. It is not. More on that below so you can stop worrying about it.
1. The Vietnam e-visa for Canadians
Canada is not on Vietnam’s visa-exempt list, so a visa is one of the core Vietnam entry requirements 2026. For a normal tourist trip, the e-visa is the one you want. You apply online — no embassy visit, no agent needed.
Here are the real numbers for 2026:
What you need to upload: a clear photo of your passport data page, a portrait photo on a white background, and the name and address of your first night’s stay. Apply at least two weeks before you fly so a slow approval does not wreck your plans.
One thing people miss: your e-visa is tied to the entry point you choose on the form. Pick the airport you will actually land at, or you can be turned away.
⚠ Watch out for scam sites. Search “Vietnam visa” and you will hit dozens of lookalike sites charging 60 to 100 USD (about 82 to 136 CAD) for the same thing. Use the official government site only. The real fee is 25 USD (about 34 CAD).
How to apply for the Vietnam e-visa, step by step
That is the entire Vietnam entry requirements 2026 visa process. No agent, no embassy, no courier. If a site asks for more than 25 USD (about 34 CAD) or offers to “handle it for you,” close the tab.

2. The new pre-arrival declaration (the one everyone misses)
This is the change to the Vietnam entry requirements 2026 that caught people off guard. Vietnam started requiring an online pre-arrival declaration at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport (SGN) on April 15, 2026, and has been rolling it out to more airports through the year. You file it online, show the QR code at immigration, and it is free.
ℹ Worth knowing: the Government of Canada currently calls this form “encouraged,” not a strict entry requirement, and some airports beyond Ho Chi Minh City were still phasing it in through mid-2026. It is free and takes about ten minutes, so just do it — and check your arrival airport before you fly.
You file it at the official portal, prearrival.immigration.gov.vn, up to three days before you arrive. You need your passport, flight details, visa info, and the full address of your accommodation.
That last part matters. You cannot finish the form without a place to stay, so book your first nights before you file. We use this hotel booking site for Vietnam because the free-cancellation rooms let you lock in an address early.
3. The health declaration confusion, cleared up
The health form is the most misunderstood part of the Vietnam entry requirements 2026. Vietnam issued Decree 165/2026 setting up a health declaration that could apply to everyone entering, leaving, or transiting the country, due to start July 1, 2026. Plenty of posts still tell you to fill it out.
On June 30, 2026, Vietnam’s Ministry of Health clarified it: the health declaration is not routinely required. It is now a framework the government can switch on only if there is a real disease risk.
✓ Good news: right now there is no general health form to complete. Just check the Ministry of Health’s official channel close to your travel date in case they switch it on.

Your pre-flight checklist
Here is the Vietnam entry requirements 2026 checklist, in the order we do it:
What if you want to stay longer than 90 days?
The e-visa maxes out at 90 days, so this is the one part of the Vietnam entry requirements 2026 that trips up long-haul travellers. If your trip runs past three months, you apply for a visa through the nearest Vietnamese embassy before you leave Canada, not online. Most travellers never hit this. But if you are doing a slow loop through Southeast Asia, plan for it early.
You can also leave and re-enter on a fresh e-visa, though that burns a flight and a travel day. We think the embassy visa is the cleaner call if you already know you are staying long.

Vietnam entry requirements 2026 FAQ
Do Canadians need a visa for Vietnam in 2026?
Yes. Canada is not visa-exempt. Most travellers use the e-visa — 25 USD (about 34 CAD) for up to 90 days — applied for online at evisa.gov.vn.
Is the Vietnam pre-arrival declaration mandatory?
Vietnam began requiring it at Ho Chi Minh City on April 15, 2026 and is expanding it. The Government of Canada currently describes it as encouraged rather than a strict entry requirement, but it is free and fast, so complete it within three days of arrival at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn.
Is the Vietnam health declaration form required?
Not right now. It was set to start July 1, 2026, but on June 30 the Ministry of Health confirmed it is not routinely mandatory.
How much does entering Vietnam cost?
The e-visa is 25 USD (about 34 CAD) single entry or 50 USD (about 68 CAD) multiple entry. The pre-arrival declaration is free.
Bottom line: get your e-visa, file the pre-arrival form, and skip the health form for now. Sort those three and your Vietnam entry requirements 2026 are done.
