🍗 Lunch at Cherng Doi Roast Chicken
We kicked off the Chiang Mai day trip with lunch at Cherng Doi Roast Chicken, a local favorite known for its flavorful roast chicken. While we found the chicken a bit on the dry side, the meal overall was still enjoyable, with tasty sides that made it worth the visit. If you’re in the area, it’s worth trying for yourself to decide if it lives up to the hype!
Cherng Doi is a classic example of Northern Thai-style roast chicken, or gai yang. The style involves marinating the bird in a blend of garlic, coriander root, and fish sauce, then slow-roasting it over a charcoal fire. The result is smoky skin and juicy meat when done well. It’s typically served with sticky rice, a spicy papaya salad (som tum), and a garlic dipping sauce. Even when the chicken itself isn’t perfect, the sides often carry the meal. Cherng Doi’s papaya salad and sticky rice were solid enough that we still left satisfied.

Next, we stopped by Diciotto SlowBar Coffee for a unique coffee experience. Ian tried Dirty Coffee for the first time, which became an instant hit! We also sampled the Aerocano, a refreshing twist on the classic Americano. If you’re a coffee lover looking for something different, Diciotto should be on your list!
If you haven’t had dirty coffee before, it’s worth knowing what you’re in for. Dirty coffee is a Thai coffee trend that originated in Bangkok and spread across the country. It’s made by pulling a shot of espresso directly over a glass of cold milk, creating a layered drink with a strong espresso top and creamy milk below. You drink it without stirring so you get the flavor contrast between bitter and smooth in every sip. It’s visually striking and surprisingly refreshing for a warm day. Nimman is one of the best neighborhoods in Chiang Mai to explore the local cafe scene, with dozens of independent coffee shops catering to both digital nomads and weekend visitors.

Our next destination was One Nimman, a trendy shopping complex that blends modern shops with traditional Thai influences. Whether you’re looking for unique souvenirs, artisan crafts, or trendy boutiques, One Nimman is the perfect spot to explore and pick up a few local treasures. Afterward, we made a quick stop at Maya Mall for a more conventional shopping experience with international brands.
One Nimman sits at the heart of the Nimman Road area, which has become Chiang Mai’s most cosmopolitan neighborhood over the past decade. The complex has an outdoor courtyard design with small independent shops, food stalls, pop-up vendors, and a stage for occasional live performances. It’s a good place to pick up handmade Thai products — think ceramic work, herbal soaps, local tea brands, and clothing with traditional patterns. Unlike the tourist-focused Night Bazaar on the other side of town, One Nimman leans more local and contemporary.
Maya Mall is the large modern shopping center next door, with everything from H&M and Uniqlo to a big food court on the top floor. It’s useful if you need anything practical or just want air conditioning after walking around outside. The rooftop food court at Maya has a good mix of local Thai stalls and international options at reasonable prices.

After a busy day of exploring Chiang Mai, I decided to check out Moment Massage, which had received some hype online. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to expectations. The massage felt rushed and lacked the quality you’d expect from a highly-rated place.
Thankfully, I found my go-to spot: Ziri Massage. The service at Ziri was exceptional, offering a relaxing and thorough experience that I ended up loving so much I returned multiple times. If you’re looking for a massage in Chiang Mai, Ziri Massage is my top recommendation.
Thai massage in Chiang Mai is genuinely world-class, but quality varies a lot from place to place. The best spots take time, apply real pressure, and follow the traditional Northern Thai technique. What separates Ziri is the attentiveness of the therapists and the unhurried pace. A 60-minute session there felt like a full body reset after hours of walking around the city in the heat. Prices for Thai massage in the Nimman area typically run from 200 to 400 baht per hour depending on the type, so it’s affordable no matter your budget.

🌙 Sunday Night Market on Rachadamnoen Road
To cap off our Chiang Mai day trip, we visited the renowned Sunday Night Market on Rachadamnoen Road. The market stretches over 1 km along the road leading to Tha Phae Gate in the Old City and is one of the most popular night markets in all of Thailand. Street performers, local artisans, and food vendors line both sides of the road, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
The Sunday Night Market is a place where you can find unique handcrafted items, local Thai art, traditional hill tribe textiles, and a huge variety of street food. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the stalls, trying different snacks, and soaking in the energy of the crowd. Some highlights from the food stalls include mango sticky rice, skewered meats, pad thai cooked to order, and freshly squeezed fruit juices. The market draws both tourists and locals, giving it a genuinely festive feel rather than a purely commercial one.
The market only runs on Sunday evenings, typically from around 4pm to 11pm. If your Chiang Mai day trip happens to fall on a Sunday, this is a non-negotiable stop. Even if you don’t buy anything, just walking the full length of Rachadamnoen Road and watching the city come alive at night is an experience in itself.

Planning Your Chiang Mai Day Trip
If you want to follow this exact Chiang Mai day trip itinerary, here are a few practical tips to help you plan. First, check the day of the week before you book your visit. The Sunday Night Market only happens on Sundays, so your whole day works best when you arrive on a Sunday morning and end the evening at Rachadamnoen Road. The other stops — Cherng Doi, Diciotto, One Nimman, and Ziri — are open daily and won’t be affected by the day you choose.
Most of this Chiang Mai day trip takes place in or near the Nimman Road area, which means you can walk between Diciotto, One Nimman, Maya Mall, and Ziri Massage without needing a taxi. Only Cherng Doi Roast Chicken requires a short ride out to the Su Thep area. Grab is the easiest way to get around, with rides typically costing between 50 and 100 baht for short distances within the city.
